Soul Retrieval: Returning to Wholeness

Soul retrieval is a healing practice rooted in shamanic healing traditions, ancient systems of knowledge that have existed for thousands of years across cultures. These traditions are diverse and vary between cultures, but many share the understanding that a person can lose a sense of wholeness or connection to themselves after overwhelming life experiences.
In simple terms, soul retrieval is based on the idea that when life feels too much to cope with, parts of our emotional or energetic self can feel “lost” or disconnected. In modern psychological language, this can be compared to experiences like dissociation, where someone may feel numb, distant, or not fully themselves after stress or trauma.
The Nature of Our Being
From a physical point of view, we are living systems made up of constantly changing cells, thoughts, emotions, and nervous system responses. We are always adapting to what is happening around us.
In many indigenous traditions, this lived experience is also understood in terms of spirit, life force, or energy. While these are different ways of describing reality, both perspectives point to the same human experience: we function best when we feel balanced, present, and connected to ourselves.
When we are in that balanced state, people often describe feeling grounded, clear, and more like “themselves.”
When We Become Disconnected
Stress plays a significant role in this.
Ongoing pressures such as work stress, relationship difficulties, anger, aggression, or even environmental factors like constant noise or sudden loud sounds can gradually wear down our system.
From a shamanic perspective, this is seen as a disturbance to our energetic integrity or a thinning of the energy field. From a modern perspective, this can be linked to the nervous system becoming overloaded or stuck in survival patterns.
Over time, this may show up as:
Increased sensitivity
Anxiety or unease
A desire to withdraw
Emotional or physical exhaustion
Feeling overwhelmed or not quite yourself
Trauma and Soul Loss
When something deeply overwhelming happens, the mind and body can protect us by creating distance from the experience. In psychology, this is often called dissociation.
In some indigenous traditions, a similar experience is described as “soul loss.” This doesn’t mean something is literally gone forever, but rather that parts of our sense of self feel cut off or out of reach after distressing experiences.
This is not a weakness. It is a natural protective response.
People may notice:
Disconnection from the body
Feeling not fully here
Emotional numbness or anxiety
Loss of identity or direction
A sense that something is missing
Sometimes, the memory of what caused this fragmentation may also feel distant or inaccessible.
The Many Ways Soul Loss Can Occur
Soul loss is not only linked to major trauma. It can also develop gradually over time.
For example, childhood experiences where emotions were not fully seen or supported can create patterns of disconnection. Even experiences that seem “small” from an adult perspective can feel very big to a child.
Major life events such as illness, loss, relationship breakdowns, or sudden change can also contribute.
How Soul Retrieval Works: The Drum Journey
In soul retrieval work, a practitioner enters a focused, meditative state using rhythmic drumming or sound. This helps shift awareness inward into a deeply relaxed state.
In this state, attention is turned inward rather than outward, allowing symbolic or emotional experiences to arise. Many people find this feels similar to deep meditation, guided imagery, or a dreamlike state.
From a shamanic perspective, this is where connection with lost parts of self can be restored. From a psychological perspective, it can be understood as working with subconscious material in a safe and structured way.
Retrieval and Reintegration
During a session, the intention is to reconnect with parts of yourself that feel distant or disconnected.
This process is gentle and never forced. It is about creating safety and allowing reconnection to happen naturally.
People often experience this as:
A sense of something clicking back into place
Emotional release or clarity
Feeling more present and grounded
The return of qualities that felt lost, such as confidence, joy, or vitality
Integration can continue after the session, as the system adjusts and settles.
What to Expect in a Soul Retrieval Session
A typical session may include:
A conversation to explore what you have been experiencing
Setting a clear intention for the work
Guided relaxation or preparation
The drum journey itself
A period of integration and reflection afterwards
Some people experience immediate shifts, while for others the process unfolds gradually over time.
Returning to Wholeness
The intention of soul retrieval is not to make you someone new, but to support you in feeling more like yourself again.
It is about reconnecting with parts of you that may feel distant, and gently supporting a greater sense of presence, balance, and inner connection.
Many people describe feeling more grounded, more emotionally clear, and more at ease in themselves over time.
